Outstanding alumni ?

Yidao,

Please distribute the following comments:

Both designs are excellent. Some of the nice features can be integrated to
make the final product even better.

I noticed the items "Outstanding alumni" and "Outstanding news" and don't
think these are appropriate, for the following reasons:

(1) Who decide which ones are "outstanding" or not? What are the criteria?
The ones making most money? The ones published most papers, achieved
highest academic positions? Got most grant? Have more children? Bottom
lines: most of our alumni are doing excellent job in their field, and like
in life, there is no absolute criterium to judge success or "outstandingness."

(2) Making a list of "outstanding" does not confirm to the spirit of this
alumni association, which is for information exchange, building friendship,
networking, etc. At our job places, we collaborate and COMPETE with
others. The alumni association is a home we all come to share things, not
to show who did well or who did not so well. We are a family. We find
comfort. We are happy for everybody's accomplishments. We are all good
and outstanding in certain ways. So lets not make such a list.

Instead, we can have a category of announcements, so that people can
contribute any good new (ONLY GOOD NEWS of course) related to his or her
work has resulted, being it a new grant, a new paper, a promotion,
"striking oil," hit a jackpot in a lotto, some achievement by their
children, someone got married, found a new wife or husband, got a big bonus
(if willing to share with all of us!).

These are just some thoughts, for your consideration.
