Dear Dr. Fan,

Congratulations! Thanks for your feedback email to Mr. Zhong Shen. I
personally feel very happy to learn that you have finally agreed to be the
President of Hubei Medical University, now part of Wuhan University. It has
taken me for more than ten years to wait for you on the right post at HBMU.
As I nominated more than ten years ago, you should be the most capable
person to run the university, who has such talent skills and leadership to
promote the university to a much higher standing.

Merging with Wuhan University was a very important step and one of few very
rare fortunes to bring HBMU out of its self-struggling period. Its
outlooking and promising future should shine with the outstanding endeavors
of several generations of HBMU faculties and its most recent leadership.
HBMU students and its faculties will always remember and appreciate very
highly the wise choice you and others at HBMU made. Now what we should do
for the new medical school at Wuhan University? As for your reference, I
would like to express very frankly my personal suggestions as followings:

1. The school name should be changed to Wuhan University School of Medicine
that includes basic medical and clinical sciences departments, hospitals,
and its affiliated supporting units. The hospitals should be part of medical
school academically, but be independent economically as before and should
never seek its equivalence to medical school.

2. The Wuhan University School of Dentists (or you called Stomotology) as
well as schools of nurses, public health, pharmacy, and hospital management
should be an independent unit, but academically affiliated to school of
medicine and supported by its hospitals.

3. Thus, this infrastructure of old HBMU could be named as Health Science
Center as seen in many US universities, which includes all schools describe
above and could be administered by a vice-president of Wuhan University
where your position should be.

4. Collaborating with oversea Alumni to train our Ph.D. students as new
faculty candidates will be next economical ways to promote our faculties at
a higher training level. You may select the few best students each year be a
Ph. D. candidate for course work at Wuhan University School of Medicine and
dissertation work at our alumni's labs for 1 or 2 years in the U.S. and then
go home for their defense. Several of our alumni have be well-established in
the US and have their own laboratories and be actively recruiting good
candidates for their projects.

I wish you the best for success in running our beloved school!
