Name change poll results

Fri Dec 29 11:20 2000 -- (5262 bytes)
Note: this was originally send out on Dec. 7, 2000. After that, I received
five more responses, 3 of them for option 3, one for option 2 and one for
option 1.

--------
Hi everybody,

More than too weeks ago, I send you an email asking your opinion about
a possible name change of our organization. Here are the three options,

1. don't change, keep old name;

2. change name, identify Wuhan University School of Medicine in the new name;

3. change name, identify both Hubei Medical University and Wuhan University
in the new name.

My email reached to about 120 people. (Many email address have expired,
so please remember to update whenever there is a change!) I received
17 responses. This is a small number, but more than what I had expected.
Thanks to all of you who have responded and who thought about it.

Among them, one is from Dr. Zeng Gang, President of Wuda Alumni Association
(Midwest Chapter). He has wonderful suggestions and I have enclosed his
email below. However, we could not count his vote since he is not a member.
Another message is for 1) but with conditions attached, and I did not count
it (we want a clear answer). Hopefully some of you would not complained about
a possible "defrenchasement" and ask for a recount. The rest are as follows,

6 for 1),
2 for 2),
7 for 3).

Based on this outcome and the written comments I received, I will recommend
to President YE Shuiqing and our "Cold Winter Meeting" in January not to
change the name of our organization for the time being.

If you know any news and events related to HBMU and the new Wuhan University,
please post it to our Alumni Forum, through the link in our web site
http://www.neurophys.wisc.edu/~cai/hbmu/ , or email me.

Have a Great Holiday Season!

I prefer 3. We should keep old connection at least for a while.
Wuhan University School of Medicine sounds strange at the moment.

My choice is 1. During this age of UNCERTAINTY, I would urge the
preservation of the original identity, at least for another year. Most
people still remember the name Hubei Medical College or Hubei Medical
University. This same discussion can be initiated a year from now. Nobody
knows what's going to happen next, considering things change so frequently
in China, sometimes depending on the mood of one "leader". Let's not give
up the identity that you've worked so hard to build so easily.

Thanks Yidao for this message. I personally think the identity
has to be changed sooner or later. It's good to start mental change earlier
rather than later. I choose option 2 -Wuhan University, School
of Medicine. We can attach the original Hubei Medical University
somehow, such as option 3, at the first few months to make people to feel
more comfortable and this attachment should be eliminated finally.

Hi, Yidao,

This is Zeng Gang, President of Wuda Alumni
Association (Midwest Chapter). I may not have a voting
right for the poll you provide, but I would like to
suggest the name be changed to

Alumni Association of Wuhan University, School of
Medicine (Hubei Medical University previously).

It reflects the current status and its previous
history, so it can include both previous and future
alumni, and it can also easily establish contact with
other Wuda Alumni Associations in San Fransisco, Los
Angles, Washington DC, and here in Midwest in United
States, and Alumni Association General Office back in
Wuhan. You don't want your organization to lose your
fresh base (school and future alumni).

Hope it helps,
Zeng Gang

First of all, I would like to express my great appreciation for your
continuous efforts to keep the Association running. Regarding its name, I
personally prefer to keep the old name or original name since it is familiar
to most of us. More importantly, The original name may more
effectively/emotionally tie all of us together than any of the potential
names could.

******** Mon Nov 20 17:49:17 2000

I don't think it could be one if we want to have this association long lived.
The choice number 3 seems more reasonable.

From my personal feelings, I prefer to the old name, Hubei Medical
University, which stands for the proud period of history of our old
students. But the University is developing, and there will be lots of
new students graduating from this university. So for the future, for
the future students, the new name would be preferable.

The 3rd item fits the needs of both the old and the new students.

I think it would be better keep our current name unitl the system completely
set. Based on the information I got from HBMU. Wuhan Univeristy hasn't clearly
named medical institute yet. Could be medical and dental. Also possible
diferent names since ist hospital wants to independent to. So if we change our
name now, we need put a long name and possibly change again.
