My fellow alumni:

This is my last quack. We had a joyful Alumni lunch party on Jan. 20,
2001 at Laurel, Maryland to celebrate traditional Chinese Spring
Festival. More than 30 people attended the event despite the chilly and
rainy weather. Each of you deserves my applause for the appearance,
especially for Drs. Tan Zhengjun and Li Xinlan who drove in from
University of Virginia.

After everybody finished a decent Chinese Buffet Lunch, Shui Qing Ye,
lame duck president of our alumni association, reviewed a laundry
list of past years alumni activities including entertaining three
delegates from our alma mater led by Dr. Fan Minwen, Dr. Huang Congxin,
Dr. Yang Guocheng, respectively, in Washington DC-Baltimore area,
organizing the congratulatory activity on the mergence of our alma
mater into Wuhan University, and taking the initiative on polling
our alumni association name issue to illustrate his point-to keep
our alumni association ball rolling- which he pledged during his
inaugural speech. Also corroborating the claim is that our alumni
website registrants have been increased from 125 in 1999 to 156
in 2000. Dr. Tu Jiancheng assumed his presidency for our alumni
association about 3 pm after he had delivered a terse and confident
inaugural speech. Besides his wife and daughter, his mother-in-law was
also among the cheering audience. As a convention, Yidao Cai who was the
vice president last year, will become president-elect. In the party, Dr.
Liu Xuefeng, a knowledgeable and informative alumnus, kept us apprized
of the current makeup of the leadership in our alma mater. The party was
ended at 3.30pm.

I 'd like to acknowledge the following people: Yidao who served as a
vice-president superbly, Professor Tian, Zhi Ming, Ke Ren and Jiancheng
who have supported our cause steadily, all councilmen Drs. Fu Li, Meihui
Pan, Jian Song, Jian Wang, Zhengxiong Xi, Ping Ye, Jianping Zheng, Shen
Zhong, Zhao Zhou who had been willing to be reigned. Each of you has
contributed to keep the ball (our alumni association) rolling (staying
in the course).

Also I'd like to share with you is that after the party, Shen Zhong, on
behalf of our alumni association, wrote an elegant congratulation email
to the newly appointed Dean Fan Mingwen. Dean Fan then returned a
gracious email to solicit the advice from our alumni. Zhi-Ming responded
by dropping his pearl of wisdom to have made several judicious
suggestions to Dean Fan Mingwen on how to build up our alma mater under
the new umbrella of Wuhan University. Jianping Zheng, a capable faculty
member in University of Southern California, drafted a patriotic letter
to call upon our alumni to visit Wuhan with a purpose. All these
relevant information in detail can be found in the Alumni Forum Section.

Finally, Yidao and I wish you a happy Spring Festival and a lucky Snake
Year!

Shui Qing Ye
