Rita is now a catagory 4 hurricane and is heading to the Texas coast, possibly making a landfall west of Galveston/Houston area.

Galveston county will initiate mandatory evacuation at 6 pm tonight. Houston mayor Bill White has called for those living in Eastern part of the city to evacuate because of water coming from the ship channel.

I know most of our alumni have already acted or planned to leave. If you have not, please think of New Orleans. With a catagory 4 hurricane, the strom surge is about 6 meters, and there are waves on top of it. On Gavelston island, even if the building can survive the storm, chances are they will not be immume to the water. So bring as much as possible.

A good idea is to take your belongs to friends/alumni in Houston area, where flooding is not expected. If you need to find alumni in Houston other areas in Texas, please visit our web site http://www.wuda-alumni.org/, I am sure they will be happy to help.

For people in other area, make plans too. For a catagory 4 hurricane, the wind can reach 100+ mph even inside highway 8, and 75+ mph as far as Huntsville. If it becomes a catagory 5, the roof usually will not survive, so people living in Pearland, Sugarland may also need to evacuate.

If you do stay, consider cover your window with wood board.
